It’s difficult for a game to avoid comparisons when faced with those kinds of immediate inspirations, but Cubic Odyssey wasn’t afraid of them.Once I started playing, I was surprised by many of the changes the game brought to the genre. However, along with those changes came some drawbacks that I’m not a fan of.

After spending more than 20 hours with Cubic Odyssey, I can say that this space-fairing game is fun. However, some odd design choices make the beginning a bit of a slog.One thing that stood out to me while playing was the visual beauty strewn about. But space is where the game really shines. Looking up at the unbelievable skybox is amazing, and out in space, surrounded by vast, swirling nebulas in every direction, it’s easy to get lost in it all.

- This isn’t to say that the planets lack visual appeal; rather, it’s more a result of the stark differences between each world.
- Cubic Odyssey doesn’t have worlds with various biomes.
- In fact, the maps are all fairly small, so each world acts as its own self-contained biome.
- This means that each world you visit has its own quirks. Some are mostly water, while others are almost entirely magma.
- Beyond that, each world is made of different materials. You could have one planet with mushroom trees, while others have coral trees.
- This creates incredibly unique environments, each with its own charm. Each planet also has its own flora and fauna, some of which are cuter than others.
- The most visually stunning aspect, though, is the appearance of the planets in space.
- Each one is a cube. As you approach its surface, the planet begins to warp and grow before you’re thrust into the planet map.
