It takes the foundation of one of the best open-world RPGs of the past few years and turns it into a three-person, co-op-focused roguelite where death is an even bigger deal. In many ways, this strange, experimental concoction is a success. Under the right conditions, Nightreign’s 45-minute-ish runs are thrilling. They’re filled with surprising encounters, challenging decisions, and satisfying opportunities for teamwork. They also feature some of FromSoftware’s best boss battles and that’s a very high bar.

The big problem, however, is that those ideal conditions are difficult to achieve. You need a consistent squad of similarly skilled players who can devote hours at a time to see what makes Nightreign special. When you don’t have that, the flaws in its design are magnified tenfold. There is excellence in this Elden Ring spinoff, but it’s just a bit tarnished.To understand why, we first need to review what Nightreign is. At its core, it’s a roguelite set on an island called Limveld.

- This island is a blend of Elden Ring’s environments, enemies, bosses, and structures.
- A run is generally split up into a three-day cycle.
- Days one and two are all about farming gear, defeating bosses, and leveling up to be as prepared as possible for the extremely difficult Nightlord bosses on day three.
- It’s a great formula.
- While you might think the mostly static map would get old, there’s enough procedural generation in each run to mix up the locations of points of interest.
- This requires you to plan a unique route each time.
- Additionally, random events like boss raids, summoning portals, and other occurrences inject a heavy level of chaos every once in a while.
