It also looks good on the table with the various locations spread out in a grid of potential. It’s such a tactile experience, dropping and collecting apprentices like stacks of chips at a casino. It’s great a keeper.

So, I was intrigued when I learned that Istanbul was coming to the App Store. How would it fare with a digital adaptation.I won’t go into detail about the gameplay itself (check out my earlier Istanbul review for that). In short, two to five players are merchants navigating a bustling bazaar in Istanbul, trading goods and currency in a race to be the first to claim five rubies. Players race around the market pushing wheelbarrows filled with produce and urging their apprentices along.

- There’s a lot of visual information to keep track of.
- The market consists of sixteen different locations, and there are multiple player and non-player pieces.
- It’s important to pay attention to what your opponents have and where they might be going next.
- Would the app be able to handle it.
- Overall, I’d say Acram Digital has managed it.
- I tested the app on a smartphone with a 5.
- 1-inch screen.
- The shrinking process from cardboard to pixels is a success.
- It helps that Istanbul’s iconography is clear and crisp.
- However, if you have difficulty distinguishing between colors, the shrunken icons for each type of good may be more difficult to identify.
- You can zoom in on areas of the board to see them more clearly, but honestly, I haven’t really needed to.
